Facing DEATH: the FACTS won't KILL you! - myths and Misconceptions

Presenter : Derek Foster, BS

Course Description:

Course Description: Social work has an important role in the delivery of meaningful palliative, end of life and bereavement care. Some social workers are Hospice and palliative care social workers, working in services which specialize in this area of support. All social workers will encounter people who are experiencing loss, the end of life or bereavement. The aging of our population and the continued advancement of medicine will only intensify the need for end-of-life medical decision making and increase the need for appropriate social work involvement. Helping Social Workers explain and identify requirements needed for "end of life" planning and preparation is essential, especially when patients are near death, and at a highly emotional and chaotic state or not mobile. Social Workers provide guidance and information to those who are severely ill or facing imminent death. Our course provides the necessary information for Social Workers to assist their patients, answering questions and concerns surrounding cremation, ground burial, green burial, and other cemetery provisions, including support services such as Grief Counseling for surviving family members.

Learning Outcomes: The course on Advanced Planning for life's end contains the following information: What is an advanced plan, and is it necessary?; Who can benefit from an advanced plan?; What options are available to those facing a terminal illness?; Who makes decisions for me before and after death?; Children's role in the cremation decisions.; Funeral/ Cemetery Advocate
